Project Watershed/ESF-MSTLinks Project

Ten Project Watershed teachers under the direction of Bill Beal, retired East Syracuse Minoa High School teacher, investigated the Project Watershed database. Supported by Project Watershed staff and SUNY ESF Educational Outreach, the teachers wrote six lessons for high school students based on real water quality data in a teacher and student guide format and linked to MST Standards. The project was funded for $7500 by the John Ben Snow Foundation in 2002. The six lesson titles are:

An ESF course taught each year for selected high school students off campus. As an ESF instructor, the high school teacher instructs the students for college credit. Global Environment provides students with an overview of global environmental problems, current rates of global change and the impacts on human populations and their quality of life.

Regional Envirothon

An annual, five county event designed to educate high school student teams about the natural environment through competition in an outdoor setting. Challenging test topics include: Soils, Forestry, Aquatics, Wildlife and a Current Environmental Issue.

"GREEN / Earth Force seeks to improve education through a global network that promotes watershed stewardship. Members investigate the health of their local river by studying its chemical, physical and biological water quality parameters. GREEN / Earth Force links people within and between watersheds, building an international network of people and institutions to encourage global understanding, sharing and cooperation."

The Living SchoolBook is a dynamic, collaborative electronic learning community connecting schools in New York State and involving multiple partners such as Syracuse University, Bell Atlantic, State Education Department, Apple Computers and Rome Laboratory. LSB is based on the belief that emerging technology can enable the best work of teachers and students. The project:

* provides hands-on teacher preparation for the implementation of this technology in K-12 classrooms by combining pedagogy and practice

* promotes on-demand development that is results-oriented, inquiry-based and individually guided

* catalyzes research on teacher thinking and the impact of technology on participating teachers, students and schools

* serves as a research and development test-bed with an advanced infrastructure that encourages project-based learning

THE ONONDAGA LAKE HABITAT AWARENESS PROJECT (CD-ROM)

Initiated by the Onondaga County Health Department Division of Environmental Health with the Living SchoolBook describes the ecosystem of Onondaga Lake. The project's goal is to change perceptions of the seriously polluted lake by providing information and education in an interesting interactive format.

Water Quality Research (CR-ROM)

Initiated by the Onondaga County Health Department Division of Environmental Health, funded by the Finger Lakes - Lake Ontario Watershed Protection Alliance and prepared by The Living SchoolBook, the CD presents a visual, textual and interactive review of the purpose and process of stream monitoring. Participants include Westhill High School and Project Watershed personnel.

Onondaga Watershed Database Inquiry Project

Completed in 2004,) five Project Watershed teachers, their student teams and three adult volunteers estimated the status of the Onondaga Lake watershed by investigating 8 tributaries they monitor. They first sought the relationship between the data collected and observed habitat and land use practices at each tributary site and estimated the status of their tributary. Living SchoolBook of Syracuse University administered the project and developed a CD based on the student teams' inquiry for regional high schools. The project was funded for $5000 by the Onondaga Lake Partnership Mini-grants Program.

Project Watershed Database Upgrade

Submitted by Living SchoolBook in 2004 and approved by the Onondaga lake Partnership Mini-Grants Program for $5000, the intent of the project was to respond to concerns by Project Watershed teachers about the database during their participation in the OWDI and MST Links projects the previous year. The upgrade cited methods used to sample water quality parameters, included a query of the data based on stream order, sorted seasonal data by month and simplified the database design for accessability to meet future needs and new fechnology. The upgrade was completed in 2005.
