Student Conclusions

In analyzing the Bear Trap Creek data available, we conclude that the water quality of this creek to be in the “Fair” to “Good” range by noting the range of the parameters tested. This creek flows through commercial areas that most likely degrade the water quality. Significant are the levels of nitrates, which have decreased, in the last few years. Chloride data is not always complete but indicates high levels leading to poor water quality. Perhaps road salt has an impact on these chloride levels. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) fluctuates over time, this parameter appears to be on a trend toward improvement, and then another sample indicates “poor” quality range. The turbidity parameter is noted to be in the “good” to “excellent” range consistently. Note that the de-icing chemicals used at the airport are now treated rather than being directly discarded into this creek, which is helping to improve the water quality of this tributary.
