Cazenovia Middle School - Community Service Day, May 2010

In May 2010, Kara Burry's 6th grade students from Cazenovia Middle School participated in a Community Service Day. The students tested the water quality in Chittenango Creek – in Nelson Swamp – a New York state  "Unique Area," which the state purchased in the late 1990's with the commitment to protect several rare and endangered species.

Examples of protected rare plants include showy lady slippers and small purple-fringed lady slippers. The threatened spreading globeflower is protected in Nelson Swamp, as is the endangered striped coralroot orchid.

Water quality was excellent last year. The students also planted trees in the parking area, and did clean-up activities. PW is looking forward to again working with Cazenovia students at this special event on May 26, 2011.
