Butternut Creek at Rt 20 - Cottonwood tree on the bank

This cottonwood(?)'s roots are in the water.

This picture may be interesting because it shows a flood tolerant tree that grows in wet areas in around streams.

I doubt the tree grew there (right in the water)...so it might be interesting to think about what has happened here. Is the stream at a high level?
